Evgenia Sagaydak
The CFO of the Ukrainian Football Association Yevgenia Sagaydak is suspected of being involved in criminal activities related to the embezzlement of UEFA funds through the offshore company Newport Management. She denies all the accusations and claims that she is being unfairly targeted due to pressure on the UAF leadership.
She explained this and provided more details about the case in a statement to Apostrophe.
“This case is a deliberately orchestrated criminal pressure on the UAF leaders. I am just an unintentional victim. It could have been anyone from the Association in my position,” she remarked.
Sagaydak mentioned that Ivan Kovalev, the prosecutor handling the case, sought her arrest in court, but the judges did not find enough reasons for such a measure.
“I am currently under house arrest under completely fabricated charges, and I have lost my only source of income because I took a forced leave at my own expense. I am taking care of my son and am unable to visit my 85-year-old mother, who has no one else to look after her but me. And yet, Kovalev is not satisfied. It's a situation where my husband is mobilized and is defending the country, and a prosecutor from Makiivka wants to imprison me before trial. Therefore, when they say that this pressure against the UAF has pro-Russian backers, I completely agree,” she stated.
Regarding the embezzlement of UEFA funds through the Newport Management offshore, Sagaydak stressed that she has never been associated with this company and did not provide any instructions regarding UEFA funds: “Completely different individuals controlled this Newport offshore. Neither I nor anyone else from the UAF have any connections to it, and we certainly did not give any instructions regarding payments. The only action taken was by the Association's president, Pavelko, who persuaded UEFA to exclude Newport from our financial dealings,” she explained.
Yevgenia Sagaidak expressed her hope for fair treatment from the judges and for a reduction in the severity of her restraint to a personal obligation.
Yevgenia Sagaydak, along with UAF Secretary General Yuriy Zapisotsky, received suspicion. Prosecutor Kovalev requested their arrest with the option of posting multi-million bail. However, both times the court rejected this due to unfounded accusations.
Prosecutor Kovalev, originally from the temporarily occupied Makeevka, was previously convicted of having connections with Grigory Surkis, who was accused of bribery.
