Roskomnadzor sent letters demanding the removal of fake materials about the events in Ukraine to ten Russian media outlets. Office declaredthat ten publications published “inaccurate, socially significant, untrue information about the shelling of Ukrainian cities by the RF Armed Forces and the death of civilians in Ukraine as a result of the actions of the Russian army.” In the materials, the military operation carried out by the Russian army “is called an attack, an invasion, or a declaration of war.”

    Notifications received:

    • “Echo of Moscow”
    • “InoSMI”,
    • “Mediazona” (recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a media foreign agent),
    • The New Times (foreign media agent),
    • “Rain” (media foreign agent),
    • “Free press”,
    • “Crimea. Realities” (media-foreign agent),
    • “New Newspaper”,
    • “Journalist”
    • “Lenizdat”.

If the media do not comply with the requirements of the department, access to these resources will be limited in accordance with Art. 15.3 of Federal Law No. 149-FZ “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection”. They also face a fine of up to 5 million rubles.

Previously, Roskomnadzor partially restricted access to Facebook. The decision was made due to the fact that Meta (formerly Facebook) restricted access to the accounts of the TV channel Zvezda, RIA Novosti, Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru. The Prosecutor General’s Office explained the sanctions by restricting Facebook’s access to the above media. The company said that the decision was made to “react as quickly as possible and eliminate hate-inciting content” against the backdrop of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. Meta refused to comply with the requirements of the Russian authorities to lift restrictions.
