The Federated States of Micronesia sent a note to Russia severing diplomatic relations, reported Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. The note was sent the day before, on February 25, the reason for it was the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Micronesia called it an unjustified and brutal invasion.
The Federated States of Micronesia is a state in Oceania, consisting of four states with a total population of more than 100 thousand people. Located in the Caroline Islands, about 4 thousand km from the Hawaiian Islands. Gained independence in 1986 but is in free association with the United States. This implies that the US authorities are subsidizing Micronesia and are responsible for its defense.
IN statement The government says that Micronesia will resume diplomatic relations only when Russia “demonstrates an effective commitment to the cause of peace, friendship and cooperation.” Micronesia notes that it supports the sovereignty of Ukraine and its “right to exist in peace and harmony with its neighbors.”
“The people and government of Micronesia have no hostility towards the people of Russia. But the same can be said about the government of the Russian Federation when it recognizes that the choice of war instead of peace, violence instead of friendship, betrayal instead of cooperation and hatred instead of love was untenable and unjustified, ”state authorities noted.
The statement emphasizes that Micronesia supports the international order, and also reaffirms the commitment to “its first and main ally” – the United States. “Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with Russia and urged its partners to do the same. Micronesia is a partner of Ukraine and other democracies and is taking a similar step … as a demonstration that we support Ukraine and categorically reject the most egregious act of aggression in Europe since World War II,” the state authorities added.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation to “denazify and demilitarize” Ukraine. After that, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ripped relations with Russia, and later announced general mobilization in the country. The United States and Western countries demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops and imposed new anti-Russian sanctions.
