On Tuesday, January 11, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree appointing Alikhan Smailov as the new head of government.

The candidacy of the former First Deputy Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov for the post of prime minister was proposed by Tokayev. After that, the deputies of the lower house of the parliament of Kazakhstan approved it, and the president of the country signed a decree on the appointment of Smailov as head of government.
It should be noted that according to the constitution of Kazakhstan, the president, after consultations with factions of political parties, submits a candidate for prime minister to the Mazhilis. To appoint a prime minister, the president needs the consent of the lower house of parliament.
Recall, on January 5, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev dismissed the country’s government and appointed a new state secretary and acting prime minister. Amid protests in the country, Prime Minister Askar Mamin wrote a letter of resignation, the president accepted it. Alikhan Smailov became the Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
