The First Court of Appeal in Moscow reviewed the sentence of 55-year-old native of Georgia Sumbat Abasov, who received nine years in prison for occupying the highest position in the criminal hierarchy.
It is reported by “Kommersant”.
Thief in law Abasov is known in criminal circles as Sumbat Tbilisi. He appealed against the verdict of the Belgorod Regional Court, but the court of appeal recognized it as lawful and rejected the complaint of the convict under article 210.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Occupation of the highest position in the criminal hierarchy”). Thus, the verdict has entered into force, Abasov will be transferred in the near future to the place of serving the sentence.
The verdict was based on his testimony that he dissuaded young prisoners from committing stupid acts, such as setting fire to the colony. In addition, during the arrest in the summer of 2020, Abasov himself recognized his highest status in the criminal world. He was caught after an unsuccessful attempt to cross the border with Ukraine outside the checkpoint in the Graivoronsky district of the Belgorod region. During interrogation by the police, he called himself a thief in law and said that he was crowned at the age of 23 in Tbilisi. His status was confirmed in court by officers of the FSB and the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, as well as convicts and defendants held with him.
During a search of the house, notebooks with the phones of the leaders of the criminal world and a laptop with photographs of Abasov with other thieves were confiscated from the authority.
Abasov is a native of Tbilisi and a Yezidi by nationality. He received the title of thief in law a year before the collapse of the USSR and spent most of his life in prison.
