A popular British singer, songwriter and performer of the hit Shape of My Heart, Sting has sold the rights to all his songs, including solo work and recordings of The Police, to the world’s largest record company, Universal Music Group.
The official amount received by the musician was not disclosed, however, the specialized media give an approximate figure – $ 250 million (about 7 billion hryvnias).
According to the Daily Mail, from now on, UMG owns the rights to both the master copies of the songs and the publishing rights. The second goes to the division of the Universal Music Publishing Group.
According to Sting himself, the record company has become a home for the fruits of his work, in which his songs are “appreciated and respected.” The artist has been collaborating with Universal Music for a long time, so the sale of rights to the entire music catalog was not a surprise to his fans.
“This is not only to connect with loyal fans in a new way, but also to introduce my songs to new audiences, musicians and generations. Throughout my career, I have had a long and successful relationship with UMG under the watchful under the leadership of Lucian Grange, so it was logical to combine everything in one safe house,” commented the legendary singer.
Lucian Grange, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, also confirmed that he has been working with Sting for over 20 years, so he was very pleased to expand their relationship.
“He is a songwriting genius, his music pervades the culture of the world. We are honored that all of Sting’s work as a songwriter and performer will now be in the UMG family,” said Grange.
