The investigator in the case of journalist Ivan Safronov, Alexander Chaban, got into a fight with a colleague.
It says in the message organization “First Department”. Safronov’s lawyers today tried to submit a petition to dismiss the criminal case.
As stated in the message, the defenders were not allowed to carry the petition to the building of the FSB investigative department, but investigator Chaban met with the lawyers for the first time in a long time. According to the “First Department”, Chaban looked “rather strange.” “It turned out that he had a fight with a colleague: he broke his leg, and tore his ligaments,” the message says.
In the message, human rights activists also once again remind that Safronov’s rights are “constantly violated.” “The petitions and meetings with lawyers are illegally denied, the essence of the charges is not explained, and the investigator deliberately hides some documents in the case from the defense.”
Recall that Ivan Safronov was detained in the case of treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) in 2020. The investigation accuses the former journalist of Vedomosti and Kommersant, and now adviser to the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, of spying for Czech intelligence while still a journalist. The investigator believes that he allegedly transmitted information about military-technical cooperation, defense and security of Russia. A non-disclosure agreement was taken from the lawyers and Safronov, the FSB also does not explain the essence of the claims against Safronov. The journalist does not admit his guilt in treason.
