Migrants with children in their arms are waiting for documents, but the process has dragged on. People sew up each other’s mouths with medical thread to attract the attention of the services.
On the southern border of Mexico, Central and South Americans sewed their mouths shut with needles and medical thread to convince immigration officials to let them pass to the US border. How informs Reuters, so the Mexicans are protesting.
“Migrants are sewing their lips together in protest. We hope that the National Institute for Migration will see that they are bleeding, that they are people,” commented Irineo Mujica, an activist at the demonstration.
For several months now, in Tapchula (a border town with Guatemala), thousands of migrants, along with their young children, have been waiting for documents to stop Mexico and get to the United States. The Mexican Migration Agency is delaying the process and people are in a difficult situation:
“I’m doing this for my daughter. She hasn’t eaten anything for the past few hours, and I don’t see a decision from the authorities. We’re like prisoners here,” Jorgis Rivera commented.
The protesters sewed each other’s lips together, leaving a small space for water. The Mexican Migration Agency said priority is given to vulnerable groups: children, teenagers, pregnant women, victims of crime, people with disabilities and the elderly.
