In Madrid, the Spanish authorities handed over Evgeny Volkov, accused of stealing icons, to the Russian police and the Federal Penitentiary Service.
This was reported on Friday, February 18, by MVD Media in its Telegram channel.
The extradited Russian was suspected of stealing in 2009. According to investigators, while in the apartment of his acquaintance in the city of Saratov, he removed the image of the Lord Almighty and the Tikhvin image of the Mother of God from the wall. He sold one icon, and hid the second at home. After a criminal case was initiated under Article 159 (“Theft”) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the Russian fled to Spain to live with his mother.
Later, through Interpol channels, information was received from Spain that Volkov was serving a sentence for a crime committed in the country. In January 2022, Madrid decided to extradite him to the Russian side.
