New EU, US, UK and Canadian sanctions include restrictions on the “sale of citizenship”. The measure will be introduced against those who contribute to the military operation in Ukraine. In addition, Washington said it would track down the property of “Russian oligarchs” – “yachts, planes, expensive cars and luxury homes,” AFP reports.
“We are committed to taking action against those individuals and organizations that contribute to the war in Ukraine and the harmful activities of the Russian government. In particular, we undertake to take measures to limit the sale of citizenship, the so-called golden passports,” the joint statement, which was published on website White House. It is noted that “golden passports” allow “wealthy Russians associated with the Russian government” to become citizens of countries that impose sanctions.
Western countries introduce the third package of sanctions against Russia against the background of the military operation in Ukraine. It involves disconnecting several Russian banks from SWIFT and freezing the assets of the Central Bank. The EC also decided to ban “Russian oligarchs from using their finances” in the EU markets.
