The United States of America is ready, if necessary, to introduce new sanctions against the largest Russian banks – Sberbank and VTB.
This was announced by a high-ranking representative of the American administration, speaking on Tuesday, February 22, at a special telephone briefing for journalists, which was dedicated to the introduction by the United States of new sanctions against Russia, writes TASS.
“Let me be very clear, no Russian financial institution is safe. If this invasion continues, then we are ready to press the button to take further action against the largest Russian financial institutions, including Sberbank and VTB, whose total assets are almost $750 billion,” he said.
The official added that the United States does not exclude the possibility of disconnecting the Russian Federation from the SWIFT interbank payment system.
“SWIFT is not included in the first part of the sanctions package, but it remains one of the options that we can use depending on what next step Russia takes,” he explained.
