This decision is connected with the conduct of a special military operation by Russia in Ukraine.
Against the backdrop of the so-called Russian special operation in Ukraine, the leadership of the German concern Siemens decided to leave the Russian market. The company has already launched a procedure for terminating its production and operations in the country, according to its official statement.
The company expressed condemnation of what is happening in Ukraine and said that the decision to leave the Russian market was not easy. They recalled long-standing relationships with Russian clients and noted that the company has been operating in the country for almost 170 years.
Among other projects, Siemens was involved in the production of Sapsan high-speed trains and Lastochka electric trains in Russia. In March, after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the company announced the termination of deliveries to Russia and suspended the contract with Russian Railways.
Today, May 12, it also became known that the management of the Finnish state energy company Fortum decided to start a controlled withdrawal from the Russian market. Back in early March, Fortum announced that in connection with Russia’s actions in Ukraine, the company would stop all investments in Russian projects, as well as reduce the number of power plants served by it in Russia. It is worth noting that Fortum owns a controlling stake in the German Uniper, which is one of the main investors in Nord Stream 2. Leaving the Russian market, Fortum plans to sell Unipro, the Russian subsidiary of Uniper.
