NATO Secretary General announced the start of the ratification of the entry of Finland and Sweden into the alliance
Countries applied to join the military-political bloc on May 18
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg today, June 5, announced that the process of ratifying Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO has started, Interfax writes.
As Stoltenberg noted, protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Alliance will be signed in the coming hours. According to him, this will give rise to the ratification process.
Earlier, the discussion of the conditions for Finland and Sweden to join NATO was completed as soon as possible. During the talks, the parties considered the obligations associated with membership in the alliance and the North Atlantic Treaty.
Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO on 18 May. On June 29, during the summit, the NATO leadership decided to satisfy them. Finland and Sweden will join the North Atlantic Alliance when the parliaments of all member countries ratify this decision.
Last Monday, Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said in his telegram channel that the residents of those cities in Finland and Sweden where NATO military infrastructure will be located will be at risk as a result of this step. The speaker of the lower house of the Russian parliament noted that at the start of military actions strikes are delivered primarily on the military infrastructure of the enemy. In this regard, Volodin called the erroneous point of view of the mayor of Lappeenranta in Finland, who proposed to place the base of the North Atlantic Alliance in the city in order to create a sense of security among residents.
