The candidacy of Berdimuhamedov Jr. was unanimously supported at an extraordinary congress of the ruling Democratic Party of Turkmenistan held on Sunday. Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who holds the post of Deputy Prime Minister, thanked the audience for their trust and assured that, if he is elected president, “he will continue to follow the spiritual principles and heritage of his ancestors, sparing no effort for the sake of the motherland and the prosperity of the people, diligently and creative approach to the implementation of the historical undertakings of the leader of the nation”.
As specified by the agency, the campaign to nominate candidates continues and “the names of other applicants will soon become known.”
On Monday, an election campaign began in Turkmenistan ahead of early presidential elections. On February 12, the republic’s Central Election Commission announced the appointment of elections for March 12, after President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov had said at a meeting of the upper house of parliament the day before that it was time to give way to the young.
