After mass protests, Uzbekistan decided to preserve the sovereignty of Karakalpakstan
The parliament of protest-ridden Uzbekistan decided to maintain the status of sovereignty of Karakalpakstan. Autonomy will be left in the draft amendments to the constitution of the country from which they previously wanted to remove it (which is why the protests broke out).
This is reported by local media.
Karakalpakstan is the largest region of Uzbekistan, it occupies almost half of its territory with a population of two million people. Most of them consider themselves Kazakhs.
Recall that in early July, Karakalpakstan was engulfed in protests against changes to the constitution, after the adoption of which the region would lose the status of a sovereign republic and the right to secede from Uzbekistan through a popular referendum.
