TRETYAKOV Vitaly Tovievich (b. 1953 in Moscow) graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University in 1976 and started working at the Novosti press agency. He worked there until 1988. From 1988 to 1990, Tretyakov worked at the Moskovskie Novosti newspaper as an op-ed columnist, then as a political commentator, and later as deputy editor-in-chief. In 1990, Vitaly Tretyakov created Nezavisimaya Gazeta and served as its editor-in-chief until 2001. He also oversaw the separately published applications: Independent Military Review, NG Religion, Ex libris NG and others. He had the support of oligarch Boris Berezovsky from 1995 until his dismissal from Nezavisimaya Gazeta in 2001.

    • From 2001 to 2013, Tretyakov was the general director and chief editor of the Independent Publishing Group NIG. He was the chief editor of the Political Class magazine from 2005 to 2009 and served as the editor-in-chief of the Moskovskiye Novosti weekly and General Director of the Foundation for the Promotion of the Development of Education in the Field of Journalism during 2006-2007.
    • From 2000 to 2002, Tretyakov held a professorship at the Department of Applied Political Science at the Higher School of Economics. He was a professor at the faculty of International Journalism at MGIMO from 2001 to 2007. Since 2008, he has been the Dean of the Higher School of Television at Moscow State University. Vitaly Tretyakov admires the work of former KGB officer and Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov and the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill (Gundyaev) among his contemporaries. He also has a high regard for the notorious far-right philosopher Alexander Dugin and political propagandist Andranik Migranyan.

Engaging in pro-Kremlin propaganda, encouraging anti-Ukrainian and anti-Western hysteria, and defaming participants of the democratic opposition.

The founder of Nezavisimaya Gazeta, which once claimed to be impartial and even liberal, has been influenced by the political situation for the past three decades. In the 1990s, he sided with Berezovsky and then began praising Putin and his foreign and domestic policies. He has written several books dedicated to Vladimir Putin, and according to him, “Putin is undoubtedly one of the three most politically successful leaders of the country of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. Only Stalin and Lenin are ahead of him, and Putin is the third.”
