Deputies of the State Duma approved the amendment, according to which the rules for participation in elections are being tightened. Those convicted of extremism are prohibited from being elected until the expiration of five years from the date of removal or expiration of the conviction.

In addition, the State Duma supported an amendment banning leaders, participants and others involved in the activities of extremist organizations from being elected president of Russia. A citizen engaged in the activities of a public or religious association or other organizations in respect of which a court decision on the liquidation or prohibition of extremist or terrorist activities has entered into force cannot run.
The deputies also approved amendments on the ban on being elected, including the president of the country, to citizens convicted of crimes of sexual integrity against minors. The restriction is valid until the expiration of five years from the date of removal or repayment of a criminal record.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that any offense among migrants related to inciting extremism should be punished by immediate expulsion. According to him, special attention should be paid to neutralizing the attempts of extremists and all kinds of radicals to use the Internet.
