The ability of the UN General Assembly to create a “special tribunal” for Russia was appreciated

The UN General Assembly (GA) does not have the authority to create a “special tribunal” for Russia.

Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, spoke about this on the air of the RT TV channel.

The diplomat noted that any such initiatives have no legal grounds. He explained that such an idea is exploited in the West for political and populist purposes.

According to Polyansky, he does not see any political basis in this idea, “except to make serious people laugh.” “This is more of a political than a legal initiative,” he said.

Earlier, First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova said that in 2023 the country would submit for discussion a draft resolution of the UN General Assembly (GA) on Zelensky’s “peace plan” and on the creation of a special tribunal over Russia. She noted that permanent representative Sergei Kislitsa would conduct the work, and an emergency special session could be convened to adopt this document.

Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia responded by saying that the “peace plan” proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has nothing to do with reality, and Kyiv “always comes up with various extravagant ideas.”
