Parliament of Georgia stopped consideration of the bill “on foreign agents”, which caused large-scale protests
As early as March 9, the bill was withdrawn from the Georgian Parliament by the authors themselves. But due to local legislation, the deputies were obliged to vote in the second reading (due to the fact that it had already been adopted in the first).
The opposition pointed out that even after reports of the withdrawal of the law, the ruling party could vote in favor, but this did not happen. Today, 35 deputies voted against, only 1 voted for.
Under the Foreign Agents Registration Bill, any individual or legal entity receiving funding from abroad would be required to register as a foreign agent. And failure to comply with the law could result in a fine or imprisonment for up to 5 years. The law was opposed by the US and EU authorities.
