Cameroon football player suspended from games in German club after supporting Russia at the 2022 World Cup
Hannover player Gael Ondua grew up in Russia, played in Russian clubs for several years and has Russian citizenship (he also played for Zorya Luhansk in the UPL in 2017-2018).
In recent years, he played in the Second Bundesliga – he moved there from Switzerland, and in the winter he got into the Cameroon national team for the 2022 World Cup. At the tournament, the player went out against the national teams of Switzerland and Serbia in boots with the Russian flag: Norwegian journalists called for him to be punished, but they did not find any reason for this.
Ondua said today that he is no longer counted on in Hannover “for obvious reasons”. He participates in training and attends home games, although they are trying to send him to the second team (this is prohibited by contract) and are exempt from some classes.
“Everyone saw what happened after the World Cup. With me – a football player who is listed in the club as a Russian citizen. And who believes that a person should always have his own truth and his own position. And right now I’m paying the price for it,” Ondua wrote in a column for Sports.
