The Russian Foreign Ministry threatened the United States with a severance of diplomatic relations if Russia is declared a state sponsor of terrorism
Maria Zakharova, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, issued a warning on this matter.
If the United States assigns the status of state sponsor of terrorism to the Russian Federation, a complete rupture of diplomatic relations between the two countries is possible. This warning was made by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova.
According to Zakharova, American legislators are currently working to declare Russia a sponsor of terrorism, but such a step will be followed by a response, up to a severance of diplomatic relations, which will be a point of no return with all the ensuing consequences.
In April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked US President Joe Biden to include Russia on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. On July 27, the Senate of the US Congress made a similar appeal, adopting a non-binding resolution.
The senators asked Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to designate the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism in connection with the events in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and Ukraine, which, as stated in the resolution, led to “the death of countless innocent men, women and children.” According to The New York Times, Anthony Blinken will not make such a decision.
The United States Department of State lists states as sponsors of terrorism if they have “provided support for acts of international terrorism” on numerous occasions. This measure enables the White House, in particular, to freeze the assets of these states, as well as to impose sanctions on third countries that trade with them. There are currently four countries on the list – Iran, Cuba, Syria and North Korea.
