Amid protests and escalation of the situation, Kosovo postpones the replacement of Serbian documents for a month
The Government of Kosovo has decided to postpone the application of the regulations on the replacement of vehicle plates and Serbian passports for 30 days, until 1 September.
This was announced by the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti.
“In cooperation with our international allies, we are committed to delaying enforcement of vehicle license plate and entry-exit document decisions at Serbian border crossings for 30 days, provided that all barricades are dismantled and full freedom of movement is restored,” Kurti said. .
The United States called for a delay in the transition to national documents and license plates. In particular, Albin Kurti was approached by US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeff Hovenier.
“I think a delay in implementation will be necessary as there seems to be misinformation and misunderstanding of this decision. We look forward to working with our partners in the EU to reduce tensions. We are not asking for the decision to be canceled, this is clear, but we ask for it to be postponed, ”he said.
It should be noted that from August 1, neutral documents and car signs of Kosovo were to become invalid. Meanwhile, the north of Kosovo is inhabited by ethnic Serbs who are negative about the separation of the region from Serbia. Kosovo Serbs opposed the transition to national documents, against this background mass protests broke out.
