The State Duma approved amendments to classify information about the size of the gold reserves of the Russian Federation
The document proposes amendments to the law on state secrets
Deputies of the State Duma adopted in the third final reading a government bill that classifies information that may constitute a state secret as information about the size of the gold reserves and state foreign exchange reserves of the Russian Federation.
The bill was developed by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation. It involves making adjustments to the law on state secrets and excluding data on the amount of gold reserves and foreign exchange reserves from the list of information that is not covered by the secrecy regime.
According to the explanatory note to the document, data on the size of Russia’s gold reserves and foreign exchange reserves should be classified so that unfriendly foreign states could not use them to harm the country’s economy.
Most likely, the law approved by the State Duma will be approved by the Federation Council and signed by the president in the coming days. Thus, it can be assumed that the size of the gold reserves of the Russian Federation will be classified in the near future.
It is worth noting that at the moment the Central Bank of Russia has already reduced the volume of disclosed information about reserves to the maximum, hiding data on their currency and geographical structure. This step is explained by the tightening of anti-Russian sanctions and the freezing by the countries of the European Union, the United States and their allies of about half of Russia’s gold and foreign exchange reserves worth $300 billion.
