Boris Johnson announces his resignation
Boris Johnson has announced in an address to the nation that he has decided to step down as Prime Minister of Great Britain and leader of the Conservative Party. The procedure for selecting a new premier and Tory leader will be determined next week.
“Obviously the will of the Conservative Party is that it should have a new leader,” Mr Johnson said during his address, which was broadcast by the British media.
He stressed that he would continue to serve as prime minister until the appointment of a new leader of the Conservative Party. The process of his selection, according to Mr. Johnson, should begin now.
The British politician also said that the UK, regardless of the reshuffle in the Cabinet, will continue to support Ukraine: “Let me tell the people of Ukraine that I know that we in the UK will continue to support your fight for freedom for as long as it takes.”
Boris Johnson has described his tenure as prime minister as “the best job in the world” that he is sad to leave. He added that he would give his future successor “all necessary support”, and expressed gratitude to the British people for the “tremendous privilege” rendered.
