As expected earlier, Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Committee of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on International Affairs, became the winner. Slutsky’s candidacy was the only one in the voting.
He was elected chairman of the party for a term of four years.
Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, became the new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia. This decision was made at an extraordinary party congress, convened after the death of its founder Vladimir Zhirinovsky.
According to Interfax, Slutsky’s candidacy was the only one in the voting. Whether the decision was unanimous is not known.
Slutsky was elected chairman of the party for a term of four years. In accordance with the current party charter, he can be re-elected an unlimited number of times.
The fact that after the death of the founder and permanent leader of the LDPR Vladimir Zhirinovsky on April 6, Leonid Slutsky was the main and, in fact, uncontested contender for the post of chairman of the party, was reported by Vedomosti back in April. Earlier, in addition to Slutsky, governors Mikhail Degtyarev and Alexei Ostrovsky, State Duma deputies Andrei Lugovoy, Yaroslav Nilov, Alexei Didenko and other party members were also named among the possible candidates for the post of chairman of the LDPR.
Last week, Leonid Slutsky was elected head of the LDPR faction in the State Duma. After Zhirinovsky, who also held this position, died, Slutsky was immediately appointed to this post as an interim.
