Zhan Belenyuk from “Servant of the People” has taken a swing at the NOC
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion and member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Zhan Belenyuk, has presented his programme for the post of president of the NOC, delo writes.
We shall remind you that earlier on his Facebook page he announced his decision to run for the office of the President of the National Olympic Committee. The deputy from the “Servants of the People” plans to change the statutes of the NOC and return the position of Secretary General, as well as to create a sanctions committee.
Zhan Belenyuk was elected as an MP in 2019 from the pro-government political force Servants of the People, but has not quit his sporting career. Thus, according to the media, in order to compete for Ukraine at the 2021 Olympics, Ukrainian wrestler and MP Zhan Belenyuk had to eliminate a strong competitor, using the formal occasion and his political connections.
At that time Zhan Belenyuk and Viktor Novikov competed in the same weight category, the only licence to participate in the Olympics belonging to the NOC was allocated to Belenyuk by the NOC decision, without any competition between the two contenders. After the Olympics, Oleg Sazonov – president of the Greco-Roman Wrestling Federation of Ukraine and main sponsor of Jean Beleniuk, and at the same time head of the faction of the banned in Ukraine OPZZ in the Poltava regional council – was recorded as head coach of the champion. In 2015 he ran for the pro-Russian Opposition Bloc, and before that he represented the Party of Regions. With this prestigious status he is mentioned in the press, although in reality the wrestler is coached by Volodymyr Shatskikh. Also Beleniuk ensured Sazonov’s inclusion in the award list by the results of the Tokyo Olympics.
We would remind you that the NOC reporting and electing assembly will take place on November 17. The main contenders for the vacant post will be the 51-year-old Minister of Youth and Sports Vadim Gutzeit and Ukrainian MP Zhan Belenyuk. It is known that the incumbent president of the NOC, Serhiy Bubka, intends to support Vadym Guttsayt in the election.
It is also worth noting that in April this year the Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service awarded MP Zhan Belenyuk with a Glock-19 pistol. Political expert Oleksandr Kochetkov said this on his Facebook page and compared this award to the awarding of the odious MP from the presidential faction Mykola Tyshchenko with a Stechkin pistol, “for the heroic defence of Mukachevo”.
